Pairing: Magazine & Passion Has Red Lips

January 27, 2016

If you’re a big butch biker, the last thing you want to order is a very curvaceous glass of wine for the fear of being teased for ordering a “woman’s” drink. But deep (so deep) down under, in Australia, a team called Some Young Punks are challenging these stereotypical conventions by producing a selection of punky plonk.

Wine is notoriously bottled with bland and sometimes eye ball-aching labels, but not this one. Each of Some Young Punks’ labels are ripped from the illustrated covers of rare and popular pulp fiction books. Passion Has Red Lips’ cover is from the novel Sin On Wheels. This is what originally compelled me to pick up this unique red wine blend and buy the goddamn thing. But what’s more, it compelled me to research the guys behind it all.

Their website states, “Each time we make a wine it may be the last we ever make – and if it isn’t worthy of being the last then it will never wear the Some Young Punks name.” This seems a little ballsy and I like it.

With all this in mind, I pray to Bacchus for this wine to be exceptional. It almost has it all; the look, the style, the makings of the perfect wine for a Carouser. Please let it taste like it’s made from God’s tears.

Like the bottle, it has a dark crimson complexion and smells of blackcurrant and fresh leather. But the taste makes my insides weep. This blend of Cabernet Shiraz is far too sharp and tannic. There are hints of cherry and the Shiraz certainly gives it that warmth, but the fruity flavour just isn’t strong enough to be memorable or enjoyable. It isn’t so repellent that I can’t finish the bottle though.

I’d give this wine to someone I didn’t particularly like but wanted to impress all the same. It certainly lacks passion, however, I do now have red lips. I feel like I’ve been shot by both sides.
