Sam Matlock, who’s originally from Southampton but now lives in London, wants to build his success in his own way, but he is still influenced very much by his parents.

“I come from a very musical background, my mum worked for labels and obviously my dad’s a musician, which I think kind of convinced me to get stuck into the musical life,” he says.

“I mean, they both told me not to but when you see your dad play so many great shows and affecting a lot of people’s lives, I wanted this to be my job. I wanted to be the highlight at the end of people’s shitty work week.”

 Anarchy

Sam’s dad encouraged him to become an architect instead of a musician, and kept him away from the concept of anarchy.

“Anarchy and communism, I think they’re very similar because they work in theory but they’re never going to work in reality, ever,” he says.

“Anarchy is a really sweet thought, you know freedom and everybody can do what they want and all that, but I don’t think half the punks have thought it through and how it’s actually going to work. That’s not to say the band [Sex Pistols] wanted total anarchy but a little bit of anarchy.

“People take things too literally sometimes, you know. If there was a little bit more anarchy in the system it might be great. It might be perfect. But if it were total anarchy it would be far from perfect. I reckon that’s what they were trying to say.“

Sex, Alcohol & Rock ‘n’ Roll

That’s not to say that Sam doesn’t get a little bit rebellious when he’s drinking. He’s a typical lager drinker who loves drinking games that dangerously involve a shot a second.

“The more you drink, the more you can handle,” he says.

“The more you get drunk, the more you know how to behave.“

He loves dive bars and praises a place called FishTank, which is just outside of Newcastle. “I’ve never seen a grimier place in the world where no one really cares what goes on. Their house lager is red stripe in a can.”

You can catch Dead! touring in April and their new CD is out now.
