The punk poet and artist Patti Smith will be the fourth person to receive a John Lennon Real Love Award during the 37th Annual John Lennon Tribute.

Patti will be accepting the award at the Symphony Space in New York City on the 1st of December. The night will also include her performing a set of her favourite Lennon and Beatles songs. The show will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with covers from more artists.

Other award winners include the Scottish ’60s singer Donovan, The Vagina Monologues author Eve Endler and rock photographer Bob Gruen.

“Patti Smith is one of the truly great and important artists of her generation,” Yoko Ono said according to Rolling Stone. “Patti’s music, writing and social activism have inspired millions to care about the world more deeply and love more fully.”

Patti Smith rose to fame in 1975 with her debut album Horses. She was nicknamed the ‘punk rock laureate’ for her style of combining punk and poetry into music. She became a prominent figure in New York and is most known for her song ‘Because The Night‘. She had previously performed ‘Oh Yoko!’ at the John Lennon Tribute in 2010. Watch below.

All the proceeds from the Tribute will go to the Gilda Club. The club named after Gilda Radner is an organisation that helps those living with cancer through workshops on meditation, songwriting and more.
