No 32 The Old Town
No 32 The Old Town, Clapham, SW4 0JE
Cocktails are often mocked by big drinkers as a weak sugar-juice overload for girls but this new bar on the block is ready to prove that theory wrong. No 32 The Old Town has racked up a sharp cocktail menu consisting of a number of delightful additions which include home-made syrups and sherberts.I scoured the generous menu unable to make my mind up on which to try first.
So, keeping with my favourite spirit, I tried the Tequila Old Fashioned. It tasted like it was made from the tears of angels but in fact was made of something similar; Don Julia Anejo mixed with agave and orange. Not only did it make my liver have an orgasm, but it made my brain flutter from the strong contents and rosemary decoration. It’s quite hard to get a perfect balance with tequila cocktails as sometimes the spirit is quite overwhelming, so it was a pleasant surprise that this golden beverage smoothly warmed up my tonsils so sweetly. The Rum Old Fashioned didn’t disappoint either with its treasure trove of flavours. Maple syrup and whiskey bitters proved the perfect complement to the smooth infusion of the Appleton VX Rum.
The place is inspired by the Clapham area which is said to be “stylish yet relaxed’ and they’ve nailed that down to a T. The wooden barreled bar with blue plush sofas added to a classic charm with a gorgeous terrace to bask in the evening glow. I was told that earlier that day the owner had been out shopping for fine art for the bar which sounded like an intellectual dream. I could imagine Sinatra himself propped up at the bar with a whiskey enjoying the art and eclectic theme.
The music is handpicked by Dj Philly which she has mixed of a variety of delectable genres and from what I heard, mainly chilled out tracks that aren’t from the mainstream. On weekend nights guest DJs are set to play to the young professional crowd that the bar seemed to have attracted. A crowd that you could imagine being the background of a Made in Chelsea programme.
Lets do Lunch! No 32 The Old Town take just the same amount of care with their food, as they do their drinks. I tried some tiny portions which was enough of a taster to know the food was divine.
It would be the perfect place for a breezy catch up or an after-work wind down. No 32 The Old Town certainly put Clapham on The Carouser’s radar.
