How to dress like Francoise Hardy
How to get Francoise Hardy Style – the looks that the fashion designers drool over.
It’s been almost three months since I’ve been practising French religiously every day and it’s been super boring. Yeah, Duolingo is great and getting better at French is fabulous, but learning languages is a really monotonos thing to do. Which is why I think most people quit.
I, however, refuse to quit. I’ve decided to mix up my French learning with a bit of ye-ye. Ye-ye was a style of French pop during the sixties. One of the poster girls for ye-ye music was Francoise Hardy. A brunette with floppy hair and an angelic voice. Her breakout song was ‘Tous les garcon et les filles’ and it quickly became her most famous song. I could endlessly celebrate her music and how it’s making my French learning a little bit better, but for today, l want to tell you about her taste in fashion.
Shortly after Francoise made record gold, she became a model and an actress. She stole the hearts of many French designers for her French Mod Style, even today. Her style has been copied, idolised and used as inspiration for countless collections. But how do you get Francoise Hardy style?
Her Signature Look
Francoise Hardy’s look was very androgynous for a time when every female was wearing skirts and heels. She made her signature look jeans and a plain top. Very simple but always classic.
Her Favourite Winter Coat
She didn’t need more than one coat. In fact, one of the things I love about Francoise is how she has one really great piece in her wardrobe that she wears to death. For winter, she picked a luxurious, sooty fur coat to keep her warm whether she was in the Alps or looking for a good book in Paris.
The Lady In White
Francoise was clearly a professional at eating spaghetti and drinking red wine. She was a huge fan of wearing white head-to-toe in white look and I can’t find a photo with a single mark or staing on her. She often paired her white skinny trousers with a simple white top which suited her tomboy aesthetic.
Making Statements
It wasn’t all skinny jeans and plain tops though. Whenever Francoise Hardy had an event or a gig, she turned up in a stand out dress by one of her favourite designers – Paco Rabanne. Despite being incredibly shy, her stage outfits roared like a lioness.
Jumper Dresses Are Life
Francoise Hardy knew that jumper dresses are both practical and cute. It proved an ideal outfit for her during the colder days in Paris. Expecially when she paired it with knee high boots and tights.

What make up did Francoise wear? She nailed the natural look. Also, did she dye her hair blonde or did it just go like that? Was her hair fine?
I have admired her for years, especially coming from Jersey, an island soaked in French names. I myself am 56 (57 in Sept) and have made several visits to France and fulfilled a 1970s dream of having a degree in English and French.
