Watch These 14 Stylish Sixties Movies

Scroll down for a list of super stylish sixties movies from Europe that every fashionista needs to watch.

I’m not a fan of reality TV.

The people are real, the locations are usually boring and the crying is ugly. If I wanted to see that, I’d just go sit in a Wetherspoons and wait for Garry to have a domestic with his ‘missus’.

I want to see unreal. I want aspirational personalites, and women who speak like poets. I want to see gorgeous clothes worn in glamourous locations. And I want tissue-dab-crying.

I can find all that in a movie.

And I have found that in several movies made in the 1960s. Especially the ones where famous designers like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Mary Quant got involved.

If you need a little escape from reality, here’s fourteen movies which will take you away to a world where people dress like goddesses.

14 Stylish Sixties Movies Every Vintage-Style Girl Should Watch:

La Dolce Vita 1960

The movie follows the incredibly intoxicating and indulgent life of a journalist in Rome. He mixes with well-dressed aristocrats and drinks with movie stars. No wonder this movie had people flocking to Rome.

A Bout De Souffle 1960

Jane Seberg embraces French girl style with her breton tops and pixie cut.

The Millionairess 1960

Sophia Loren teaches us how to find clothes that make us feel like a million pounds and then shows us how to gracefully take it all off.

Last Year In Marienbad 1961

If Chanel made movies… the costumes were designed by Coco herself. And the cinematography is hypnotic.

Le Mepris 1963

The French New Wave movie that paved the way for art and beauty over story. I think Bardot is at her most stunning (and most pouty) in this one.

Darling 1965

All eyes are on the very British Julie Christie who has a love of A-line skirts and big hair. And that accent is incredibly charming!

Mord Und Totschlag 1967

This list would be lost without an appearance from Anita Pallenberg. She starred in this German drama movie that features music by Rolling Stone Brian Jones.

Blow Up 1966

A British-Italian movie which centres on the life of a very obnoxious fashion photographer. We see Verushka and Jane Birkin pop up in this one.

Play Video

Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? 1966

A French arthouse movie that satorises the fashion world including the notorious Vogue editor Diana Vreeland.

Play Video

Peppermint Frappé 1967

Taking some style tips from Spain in this psychological drama.

Play Video

Belle Du Jour 1967

Sex, Fashion and Paris. This film had everything and it’s all dressed up in Yves Saint Laurent.

Play Video

Two For The Road 1967

Naturally, any movie that Audrey stars in, is bound to be stylish. In this road trip movie, we get to see her waltz around in Paco Rabanne and Mary Quant.

Play Video

Joanna 1968

Watch as Joanna makes her way stylishly through the swinging sixties London scene.

Rosemary's Baby 1968

If you wanna take a break from all the dramas, watch this horror movie starring Mia Farrow. She made Peter pan collars and big eyes look haunting.

After watching all these super fashionable and uber-stylish movies, you’ll have no excuse for having terrible taste in clothes. Am I right?

In that case, have a peek at my vintage boutique for some sixties pieces to add to your wardrobe.

P.S. Do you have a favourite fashion movie? Before 60s or after, let me know in the comments below, I can never get enough of watching beautiful clothes.

Brilliant Mandy! As I’ve mentioned on previous occasions, you capture the essence of the era, not only in the films you have selected here but in the narrative and writing style which engages with both young and old(er). From your No1 fan!
